General D. MacArthur- appointed army chief of staff in 1930 during the Great Depression, MacArthur spent five years attempting to preserve the military's viability despite severe cuts in appropriations.
General D. Eisenhower- He served as an assistant to General Douglas MacArthur in 1920's. He was sharply critical of General MacArthur for his use of excessive force in handling a demonstration of former servicemen called bonus marchers, who applied for extra pensions after the start of the Great Depression. He was the 34th president of the United States, serving after President Truman.
President H. Truman- He became the Pendergast machine's candidate for the U.S. senate in 1934. Through his tireless campaigning and the efforts of the Pendergast machine, he won the democratic nomination and easily carried the general election. In the Senate, he consistently supported President Franklin D. Roosevelt's domestic and foreign policies.
